Taking the Kids on a Florida Golf Vacation? Try Orange Lake Resort Orlando

By: Tim McDonald

Most golfers in the country, and many from foreign shores, have heard of Florida's famous golf resorts.

However, many – including Floridians – might not know about all the mid-level resorts the state offers, resorts that make up for the lack of fame and prestige with very reasonable rates combined with excellent golf.

The Orange Lake Resort Orlando is one such place. I just returned from a visit to the resort and was impressed with several things, the first being the quality of golf.

The resort has two good 18-hole layouts, the Legends - designed by Arnold Palmer's company - and the Reserve. I'll be writing in-depth course reviews on these two tracks in my next two blogs.

The other impressive thing I noticed was the way the resort caters to families, especially – since this is a golf blog – when it comes to getting the whole family involved in the sport.

They have four courses in all. The other two courses are geared for the whole family. Legends Walk is a Palmer company design, a nine-hole, par-3 walking course. It's also lighted for night play.

Crane's Bend is another nine-holer, an executive course that winds around the fountain lake. It features six par-3s and three par-4s. These are easy courses for kids to learn the game, while the 18-holers are challenging for any adult.

All the courses are open for public play and though the resort, part of the Holiday Inn Club Vacations group, sells timeshares, plenty of rentals are available. For example, I stayed in a two-bedroom villa overlooking the golf course.

It's a huge place, 1,400 acres in all, and the resort has: nine restaurants, shops, a lazy river, seven swimming pools, water slides, kids' centers, a 12-acre waterpark and an 80-acre lake with watersports (just to name a few things for the family to do).

The resort struck me as a convenient, economical place to stay for an Orlando vacation – with Disney World and other Orlando attractions right down the street – especially if you're a golf-playing family.
