Ever Hear of a Mini-Course Designed by Arnold Palmer?

By: Tim McDonald

If you're a golfer, you've almost surely heard of the Stadium course, designed by the radical architect Pete Dye, at the Sawgrass Marriott Golf Resort and Spa.

Even if you're less rabid about the game, you've still probably heard of the Valley course, also designed by Dye, the resort's other 18-hole layout.

But, did you know the resort has a kid-friendly mini-course, which resort officials say was designed by Arnold Palmer? Not many minis – this is essentially a snazzy putt-putt course -- have such luminaries behind their creation.

Sawgrass Marriott has quite a reputation in the golf world, but many golfers might not know it is considered by at least one magazine as one of the better family-oriented resorts; Parents Magazine recently named it one of the best beach resorts for families.

The Sawgrass Marriott has a couple of family specials going on this summer. The one I like best is the "Stay Together, Play Together" package.

They give you a $100 credit for each night you stay. Stay five nights, get $500. Not a bad deal.

That credit can be used for golf, at either the famous Stadium course, or its less-famous but –in the eyes of many – equally challenging Valley.

If you decide to do it, make sure you blow all your credit – they won't give it back to you when you check out. The deal is good through Sept. 30.
