North Palm Beach Country Club a Top 50 Municipal Course

By: Tim McDonald

Regular readers of this blog know that I like to plug municipal golf courses because they are affordable venues for the public to get involved in the game.

Readers may also know I have often plugged Crandon Golf Course in Key Biscayne, one of the best munis anywhere in the country.

Well, here's another must-play Florida muni: North Palm Beach Country Club.

Both of these courses made a very exclusive list this past year: They are among the best in the country according to Golfweek magazine's list of top 50 municipal golf courses, courses owned by local governments.

North Palm Beach is one of only three "signature" munis by Nicklaus. It was completely renovated in 2006, a renovation that, in addition to making the course more playable, added a new irrigation system, total re-grassing of all playing surfaces, new greens and improved fairway surface drainage.

The course is a venerable, Florida layout, having opened in 1926 from a design by Seth Raynor. It has a lighted driving range and putting green, in addition to a locker room that would be the envy of many private clubs.

North Palm Beach is the area that Nicklaus has called home for many years, but he did not do the renovation for nothing.

In fact, he did charge the astronomical sum of $1. That's right: one dollar.

"This was my way to give a little something back to the community and the people who have given me so much," Nicklaus told the media at the grand reopening after the renovation work.
