Get Naturally High at Black Diamond Ranch's Quarry Course

By: Tim McDonald

Let's say a person -- you – was plucked from a state in the middle of the country and transported, blindfolded and by helicopter, to the Quarry golf course at the Black Diamond Ranch in Lecanto. Nobody tells you where you are.

And then let's say you were offered $1 million to name correctly the state you were in. These would be your probable answers:

-- New Mexico

-- Arizona

-- Switzerland

You'd be wrong, of course, and you'd blow $1 million. The correct answer: Florida.

There simply is no other course like the Quarry in Florida and most probably in the Southeastern United States. Critics might argue over the best course in the state, but there can be no argument over the most dramatic.

The Quarry, like its sister courses the Ranch and Highlands, has some very unusual, actually downright strange, elevation change. Fairways drop and climb, slither and creep, and basically do things that fairways in Florida simply don't do.

Then, when you get to No. 13, a par-3, the Quarry takes it to another level. You're standing on the elevated tee box gulping, because you are suddenly looking down at the green a whopping 75 feet below and 183 yards away. The green looks like a postage stamp.

The next four holes curl around what used to be a limestone quarry, and all are equally or more spectacular. You might as well be on the craters of the moon as in Florida. It's breathtaking. You're so high, you feel like yodeling. The holes are surrounded by canyon walls and the fairways and greens are far, far below. You are faced with some prodigious carries over gaping canyons to distant fairways. Try at least one of these holes from the back tees.

Did I say "canyons?"

Yes. The Quarry is a must play for anyone who wants to experience the best of Florida golf. It also helps that the course is located in beautiful, semi-rural Citrus County. Nor is this a one-dimensional course. It is consistently excellent from No. 1 to No. 18.
