King for a Day

By: Terry Gibson

The 18th Annual FALL King of the Beach, King Mackerel Fishing Tournament is around the corner and coming to Madeira Beach. It's touted as the largest mackerel fishing tournament on the Gulf Coast. An estimated 250-plus boats carrying anglers of all skill levels will compete for $70,000 in cash prizes.

Anglers target king mackerel and Spanish mackerel. And king mackerel are more abundant in the Gulf than they've been in generations. They're thick! Tournament boundaries are from Cedar Key to the North and Boca Grande to the South. You can fish Tampa Bay and from the beaches out to 30 miles. First place takes home $10,000 and the coveted crown. The top twenty-five boats receive cash prizes. Cash prizes go to a number of divisions, including youth and ladies divisions. There will be food from twelve restaurants and $3 drafts at the weigh in. Should be a blast.
