Spirit of 45 Day

Visit the Lighthouse and capture the spirit of 1945, when the United States’ involvement in WWII ended. In 2013, the 500th anniversary of Juan Ponce de Leon's arrival in Florida was commemorated by a state-wide initiative called Viva Florida 500. Building on the success of those programs, Florida is continuing with a multi-year campaign called Viva Florida, as a way to promote 12,000 years of the state's people, places, and cultural heritage. As part of Viva Florida, this year the focus is on the 70th anniversary of the end of World War II. Victory Florida events will take place all over the state and a calendar of programs can be found at vivaflorida.org. The Ponce Inlet Lighthouse is proud to offer a permanent exhibit dedicated to the role of this lighthouse in the war effort as well as a number of ongoing programs that reference the Second World War. In 2010, Congress voted unanimously in support of this day, coinciding with August 14, 1945, the day President Truman announced that WWII was over and America assumed the leadership in rebuilding the postwar world. Enjoy the traditional sounds of a bugler at the site of the tallest light house in Florida. Lighthouse admission will be free for all retired veterans with proof of service. Lighthouse admission will also be free for all active duty service men and women with service ID card and their immediate family members including children under the age of 18. All activities are included with regular admission, no advance reservations required. Please contact Mary Wentzel at mwentzel@ponceinlet.org, or (386) 761-1821 ext. 18, for more information. To find these activities and much more visit our website at www.ponceinlet.org.
