A celebration and tribute to the LGBT community and its unique culture, the weekend-long Pride Fort Lauderdale on March 1-2 kicks off a series of gay pride festivals throughout South Florida that carries on into the summer.
This year’s headliner artist is Sheena Easton. Along with more than 250 vendors, there are comedy shows, live music, food and a dance tent. Entertainment is inside and outside the War Memorial Auditorium, 800 NE Eighth St., Fort Lauderdale.
The event is organized by Pride South Florida.
Fort Lauderdale, along with Oakland Park and Wilton Manors, is known for its large LGBT community and has one of the highest ratios of gay men and lesbians in Florida. It’s a popular – and welcoming – vacation spot for gays and lesbians.
Other big pride events occurring in South Florida after Fort Lauderdale’s fete include:
- Miami Beach Gay Pride, which attracts more than 80,000 with a beach party festival and parade. It’s April 11-13, 2014; http://miamibeachgaypride.com
- Key West Pride, June 11-15, 2014, which features a family-friendly street parade, clothing-optional late night parties, pool parties, dances, sunset sails, comedy acts and films; http://www.keywestpride.org
