On the last Friday of every month, you can grab a bike and join hipsters, serious cyclists, beach bums, grandparents, even some from the blinged-out club crowd and the occasional Miami Heat celebrity basketball player, for Miami Critical Mass.
Bicyclists, skateboarders, inline skaters, roller skaters and other self-propelled commuters take to the streets en masse for the monthly event, which now draws 1,000 to 2,000 people each time. Their goal: to celebrate cycling and take back the streets.
Participants – some blasting music from boom boxes in their bike baskets – keep a moderate 12 mph pace and stay close together for safety. The riders meet at 6:30 p.m. at Government Center, 111 N.W. 1st St., in downtown Miami, with the ride starting at 7 p.m.
