You won't see a more charismatic bird than the Florida scrub-jay. Really, these cool little guys will sometimes come up and land right on you.
At the very least, they will sit close by in the trees, chattering up a storm and allowing you to get some pretty decent photographs. If you haven't seen a Florida Scrub-jay before, the Lyonia Environmental Center in Volusia County is where you want to be.
On Feb. 8, celebrate all things related to this federally threatened species during the Florida Scrub-jay Festival at Lyonia Environmental Center. Since the neighboring Lyonia Preserve is the largest remaining habitat for the Florida Scrub-jay, it makes sense that the festival location would be in easy proximity for guided field trips and other family fun.
The festival is free to attend, and attendees can take part in eco-activities such as guided walks and buggy rides through Lyonia Preserve, exhibits and plenty of activities for children.
The Lyonia Environmental Center is located at 2150 Eustace Avenue in Deltona. For more information, visit www.lyoniapreserve.com.
