A1A: A World Class Road Trip

By: Gary McKechnie

Sometimes natives like myself tend to take Florida for granted. When you’ve traveled across the state for half a century, often it’s hard to see the state the way visitors do.

So I took a drive on A1A.

In about a day I saw scene after scene that reminded me why visitors come here, and why they should.

I saw it in the colorful atmosphere of Lauderdale-by-the-Sea and then repeatedly in the wonderful blue-green waters of the Atlantic Ocean.

A1A hugs the shoreline and slides through places like Hillsboro Beach and Highland Beach and you’re often persuaded to stop just to experience this drive the way tourists do.

When you contrast the many levels of South Florida in walking towns like Delray Beach and, a few miles north, the kitschy mobile home community of Briny Breezes and then keep driving along the waterfront and canals and passing mansions and yachts as you ease your way into tony Palm Beach, the diversity and beauty of Florida surrounds you,

If you’re looking for a great one-day or weekend drive, A1A between Fort Lauderdale and Palm Beach is calming, intriguing, and beyond beautiful.
