Whether you’re looking for the perfect restaurant to nourish a plant-based diet or are just in the mood for a big, leafy green salad as a healthy option while on vacation, here’s a roundup of vegetarian and vegan restaurants located throughout the state.

SOUTH WALTON

Menu sample: This is the type of restaurant that makes you feel you did something good and healthy for yourself.  Serving a variety of fresh-pressed juices and delicious plant-based meals, including Mango Samosas, A Buddha Bowl filled with whole grains and veggies, and their famous Kale Avocado ala Present Moment with avocado and lemon massaged kale with red bell pepper, sesame seeds, and candied pecans.

DAYTONA BEACH

Menu sample:  At this restaurant, avocados are king. They have a whole section of their menu dedicated to vegetarians titled, “Herbivore Space.” Try their most popular sandwich, the Dancer Avocado Melt with sliced avocado, three melted cheeses, tomatoes, sprouts, and onions served on toasted multigrain.

CENTRAL FLORIDA

Menu sample:  Chef Tenanda Madhi graduated from the Matthew Kenney Academy, whose owner is considered one of the world's finest raw food chefs. Try the creamy Kale Soup, Heirloom Lasagna, Asian Noodles with Sweet Dragon Sauce, or Create Your Own Master-Pizza with macadamia ricotta cheese and pesto. Everything is heated to less than 115 degrees to preserve its enzymes.

Menu sample: Dandelion’s menu offers a lot of hearty salad options that can be served in a bowl or wrapped as a sandwich as well as customer favorites such as Henry's Hearty Chili with organic tempeh, tomatoes, kidney beans, bell peppers, sweet corn, red onions, and spices.  My personal favorite is their Fluffer Nutter sandwich with almond butter, bananas, and rice-mellow fluff.

Menu sample: This urban cafe with a funky vibe has plenty of sandwiches, salads, and snacks available as a vegetarian option. Try their Rubin Farr, a not-so-classic rueben sandwich with tempeh, kraut, vegan 1000 dressing, daiya, jalapenos served on a rye break with chips.

A few notable menu items include their portobello churrasco with chimichurri,  oyster mushroom-passion fruit ceviche with crispy corn chips, and guilt-free lasagna made with layers of ruskin tomato, zucchini, sun dried tomato marinara, herbed cashew ricotta, and basil spinach pesto.

Menu sample: A growing cafe that just opened their second location. On the menu you’ll find juices, salads, and sandwiches, but their tacos are what really made my mouth water. The Insane Bell Pepper Tacos have black beans, quinoa, soy chorizo, onion, plantains, pico, bell pepper, and Daiya cheese in steamed Bell Pepper halves.

Mi Vida Cafe

Menu sample: While it might sound like meat, and look like meat, here’s it made of soy.  Try their Caribbean Soy Chicken Panini with grilled soy chicken breast, pineapple, avocado and red pepper or veg out with the Organic Quinoa Salad including fresh spinach leaves, shredded cabbage, pepper, cucumbers, raisins, cranberry, mixed nuts and olive oil.
