At the Sandpearl Resort, it seems Florida sunshine comes in liquid form, at least when the winter temperatures dip to unusual lows.
It's rare that parts of Florida dip below freezing, but when they do, guests at the Sandpearl Resort are in for a treat. The resort has a time-honored tradition where every time the temperature is projected or in fact dips below 32 degrees Fahrenheit, guests can receive “bottled heat” in the form of bourbon.
It doesn’t happen often, but now that we’re actually hitting some chilly temps in some areas, the resort was able to bring back the tradition this year!
It's a tradition dating to 1937, back when the Clearwater Beach Hotel stood where the Sandpearl Resort is now. The Clearwater lacked a heating system, so this complimentary "bottled heat" was given to warm up guests.
It was quite the scandal when the owner first initiated the practice, back in the era of Prohibition. Nowadays, when the cool temp is projected, a card is placed in each guest's room to invite them to the resort's bar at Caretta on the Gulf to redeem for some of that bourbon.
After your liquid winter warm up, Caretta is a perfect spot to cozy on up to a gourmet meal with a view. Known for superb steaks, seafood, and sushi, it's also one of Emeril's favorites. You can watch a video of Emeril at Caretta here, or go there in person to experience their mouth-watering famous dishes yourself!
