Pets are family members, too! That's the philosophy on stunning, seashell-covered Sanibel and Captiva islands, located on the southwest coast of Florida.
Connected to the mainland by the Sanibel Causeway, the islands are an oasis of charm with lots of family-friendly things to do -- even involving the furriest member of the group.
Vetstreet.com recently listed one of Sanibel's beaches, Algiers Beach, as one of the most dog-friendly stretches of sand in the country. As you likely already know, the beaches on the island have more than 250 different species of seashells. So while you scour the sand for beauties to add to your collection, bring along your four-legged friend to help in the hunt.
Here's a list of a few pet-friendly places to stay on Sanibel and Captiva Islands:
- 'Tween Waters Inn Island Resort & Spa (this hotel is on my must-go list!)
- Waterside Inn on the Beach
- Sanibel Anchor Inn and Cottages
- Castaways Beach and Bay Cottages
- Sanibel Moorings
- Beachview Cottages
- Mitchell's Sandcastles
- Sunshine Island Inn
Photo Essay: Meet Elway (yes, named after NFL great John Elway), a member of my family who loves to travel with us around the Sunshine State. Although he's an avid paddle-boarder and enjoys rolling in the sand, he's not a fan of getting his fur wet.
