Although slathering on sunscreen is standard protocol at Florida beaches, in some instances you don’t need it. Such is the case in these three sand-swept, after-dark Florida beach adventures.

See an Ancient Ritual

Imagine tiptoeing out to the shore on a starry evening to observe a mother Loggerhead sea turtle laying her eggs. Thanks to the Sea Turtle Preservation Society, you can enjoy this experience during June and July in a Turtle Walk in Brevard County, the largest sea turtle nesting area in the Western Hemisphere. Call 321-676-1701 during May to make reservations.  MacArthur Beach Park in North Palm Beach and the Gumbo Limbo Nature Center in Boca Raton offer similar experiences.

Star-Struck Wonder

Dig your toes into the sugar white sands of Pensacola Beach and marvel at the heavens. Thanks to the Escambia Amateur Astronomers' Association, you can enjoy Star Gazing at the Gulfside Pavilion – for free. Volunteers set up nearly 20 telescopes ranging in strength and size for views of the Moon, planets, the Milky Way and other galaxies. These periodically offered events start just before sunset, clear skies permitting.

Dance into Romance

Hold onto your honey on Hollywood Beach. You can experience Music and Dancing under the Stars at the outdoor Beach Theatre (Johnson Street and the Broadwalk) every evening except Tuesday and Sunday from 7:30-9 p.m.  After the show, indulge in a glass of wine and dinner along the oceanfront Broadwalk. This free Concert Series runs year-round and is weather permitting.
