Where the crystal clear spring-fed Rainbow River meets the dark, swamp-fed Withlacoochee River in Dunnellon, boat captain and tour guide Jon Semmes serenades visitors with Florida-themed songs and his own ecology lessons.
The former traveling musician who grew up in the area settled down about eight years ago to take tourists on his fun “Singing River Tours,” which last one hour and 40 minutes on a 40-foot pontoon boat.
While cruising by gators, ibises, hawks and gorgeous live oaks dripping with Spanish moss, he teaches visitors about the local ecology, tells stories and plays lively, often environmentally themed songs on his six-string guitar.
The country songs he sings are mostly from Florida songwriters, including one written by his mom. (You can listen to him on his own website, http://www.jonsemmes.com).
Semmes’ tours, which start at $15 per person, are wheelchair and handicap accessible. They launch daily, when weather permits, from the Angler's Resort, 12189 S. Williams St., in Dunnellon, about 20 miles southwest of Ocala.
Reservations made by phone are required.
