As a colleague recently put it, Veterans Day is “more than just a day to sleep in and catch up on laundry.”

Veterans Day is Monday, Nov. 11, 2013. All across Florida, attractions are saying “thanks” by offering free admission for service men and women. Here are a few places where vets can get a well-deserved day of fun.

Jacksonville: Heading to Jacksonville Zoo and Gardens? Veterans can print a coupon good for free admission Sunday and Monday.

Key West: Swim on over to the Key West Aquarium, where veterans, active-duty military and police officers get free admission. The offer is good Nov. 9, 10 and 11.

Naples: On Nov. 10, the Golisano Children’s Museum of Naples is offering free admission for active-duty military personnel and veterans, plus up to five family members. There will be special activities in the afternoon.

St. Petersburg: At the Dali Museum, admission is free veterans, military, police and firefighters on Nov. 11. Their immediate family members can get discounted admission of $11 (regular price: $21 for adults). At 11 a.m., there will be a special ceremony honoring vets at the Dali Wish Tree in the museum’s garden.

Tampa: Active-duty military and veterans will go wild for free admission to Lowry Park Zoo. The offer is good Nov. 10 and 11.

Winter Haven: At LEGOLAND Florida, vets get an extra-special salute--free admission from Nov. 1 to 17, plus the opportunity to buy tickets for up to six companions at a discounted price of $40 (regular price: $81 for adults). On Nov. 11, there will be special Veterans’ Day activities, and vets will get 20 percent off food and retail items.

Restaurants statewide: On Nov. 11, a bunch of eateries are offering free meals for vets. There are far too many to list, so click here to check them out.

Parks statewide: National parks are offering free admission for all guests -- veteran or not -- on  Nov. 9, 10 and 11. Same goes for Florida’s state parks on Nov. 11, as I mentioned in an earlier blog post.

Be sure to share this with the vets in your life. And if you know of additional Veterans’ Day freebies, please drop a note on my Facebook page.
