I’m one of those football watchers who’s more interested hooplah than the actually gave: you know, the national anthem, the halftime show... and most of all the food. So the Great Southern Tail-Gate Cookoff is my kind of event.
The fourth annual event brings more than 60 professional and amateur barbecue teams to Amelia Island for a two-day culinary smackdown benefiting the Gator Bowl Association. Aug. 23 and 24, enjoy free entertainment, kids’ activities and the opportunity to purchase a wristband so you can sample the barbecue and vote on your favorite entry.
To give you a place to rest your head after all that good eatin’, a handful of local hotels, inns and vacation rentals have some great lodging deals marinating for the cookoff weekend. No ribbing, I promise.
