Jan. 5: River, Roots and Ruts Trail Run

By: Kevin Mims

Love woods, wildlife and hitting the trails? Then it’s time to get
those running shoes dirty at the River, Roots & Ruts Trail Run at
Caloosahatchee Regional Park in Alva.

The event takes place Sunday, Jan. 5, and there are two distances to
choose from: The half marathon and relay start at 8 a.m. and the 5K
fun run starts at 8:15 a.m. The half-marathon course is challenging
but running it is definitely a worthwhile experience. Runners will
likely see and hear various bird species along the way and might
encounter gopher tortoises, rabbits or deer if they’re lucky.

The park, located along the Caloosahatchee River, is a must-see for
nature lovers, and it’s frequented by mountain bike enthusiasts,
equestrians and hikers alike. It’s pretty big (more than 700 acres)
and full of oak hammocks, flatwoods and cypress swamp.

Unless the race fills up earlier (there will be a maximum of 350
entries), you have until Saturday, Jan. 4 to register.
