Florida Fun Under the Moonlight

By: Kevin Mims

We all know Florida is the Sunshine State but there’s a whole lot to see and do after the sun goes down. Here are some upcoming events I think you’ll like:

·      Moonlight Bike Ride at Myakka River State Park at 5:30 p.m. Thursday Jan. 16. Ride an easy 10 miles and see the sunset across Big Flats. Info: https://www.floridastateparks.org/park-events/Myakka-River

·      Full Moon Beach Hike at Gamble Rogers Memorial State Recreation Area at 5 p.m. Wednesday Jan. 15. This is an easy guided hike that will allow you to learn all about how the moon affects the tidal ecosystem. Info: https://www.floridastateparks.org/park-events/Gamble-Rogers.

·      Moon Over the Mounds and Open House at Crystal River Archaeological State Park at 8 p.m. Friday Jan. 17. Let a guide teach you about this fascinating pre-Columbian site.  Get there early for the open house from 4 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. Info: https://www.floridastateparks.org/park-events/Crystal-River-Archaeological

·      Creatures of the Night – Luna Moth at Faver-Dykes State Park at 5 p.m. Friday Jan. 17. Take part in this hour-long ranger-led group activity that will teach participants about the nocturnal luna moth. The event includes an easy half-mile walk through luna moth habitat. Info: https://www.floridastateparks.org/park-events/Faver-Dykes.

All of these spots are fantastic wildlife viewing locations and these events make it possible to get a chance to check out some species that you rarely see during the daylight hours. Don’t miss them!
