DeLand: Old Florida With A New Look

By: Gary McKechnie

A few weeks ago I was in DeLand to shoot a new video for VISIT FLORIDA and it was mighty impressive.

It’s midway (roughly) between Sanford and Daytona Beach and when I was there, it struck me that while me and my fellow Insiders cover a variety of topics -- beaches and adventure and outdoors and nature, fishing, golf, dining, shopping – DeLand also covers every one of these.

In a town of 27,000 people there are nine museums, award-winning restaurants, a thriving – and nostalgic – retail district along Woodland Avenue, natural springs north and south of town, the St. Johns River a few miles west, the still-active 1921 Athens Theatre, and DeLand is also the home of Stetson University.

It’s a quiet town with a lot of energy; a place that’s casual and cultural.

All in all, DeLand is a fantastic place to explore on a day trip or weekend getaway or longer. It’s a small town with big ideas.

PS: I’ll keep you posted when the video’s up.
