It's Greek to You: Take Bouzouki Lessons in Tarpon Springs (Only $5)

By: Gary McKechnie

If you haven’t been to Tarpon Springs, it’s as if a bit of Athens, Greece, has been placed on Florida’s Gulf Coast. In fact, the Greek culture here is so prevalent that this may be the only place in Florida where you can learn how to play the bouzouki. If you’re looking for a new musical challenge, this may be the right class for you.

On Sundays starting May 19, Leonidas Zafiris and Elias Poulos will be offering lessons for only $5 per class, and it’s probably worth far more than that because, according to the information I received, Zafiris played bouzouki for top vocalists in Greece for over 25 years. And Poulos? He has a repertoire that includes the latest hits from Greece as well as well-known dimotika, rembetika, nisiotika. Even that sounds impressive and I don’t even know what it means.

Learning anything is usually a good thing, and learning to play an instrument as entertaining and distinct as a bouzouki is an opportunity you shouldn’t pass up. If you own the instrument already, bring it along. If not, they’ll have a few available.

To register, just give Tina Bucuvalas a call at (727) 937-1130.

Classes will be held at:
The Safford House
23 Parkin Court
Tarpon Springs
