Just when you think you know everything about Florida…
You learn something new.
Having traveled off the beaten path for years, I was pleased when my brother sent me a link to a blog site about the Fort Gates Ferry, which was originally posted on FloridaBlackBearScenicByway.org
So after I took a trip on the ferry (you can see the blog here), I took a closer look at the Florida Black Bear Scenic Byway, which roughly criss-crosses the Ocala National Forest – aka the Big Scrub – and rolls through portions of Marion, Lake, Putnam and Volusia counties and puts you in the neighborhood of natural springs, forest trails, small towns, the St. Johns River, and scenery you can only find in Florida.
Go the distance and you’ll see not just the Ocala National Forest, but Lake George State Forest, the Heart Island Conservation Area and Tiger Bay State Forest.
It’s an impressive portion of Florida, and a glimpse at the Black Bear website will definitely spark a desire to see it today.
