What struck me about the Marriott Golf-managed property in Kissimmee was how quickly I arrived (I-4 to exit 65 and east on Osceola Parkway; three miles east of Disney) and then how quickly forgot where I was.
The Rees Jones-designed course is blessed with a wooded setting devoid of visual clutter such as resort buildings or towering hotels. The top of the Marriott World Center could be spotted in the distance and a few homes were behind mounds on the sides of a couple holes, but that was it. The views are nearly 100 percent pure golf.
I played there with some Florida tourism friends recently at the annual Governor’s Conference on Tourism, and we got to take it all in while playing a scramble format. Funny how you can enjoy the sights easier when you’re not playing all your foul balls.
At the par-5 14th, my team had a wedge into a green bordered by dense forest. With a pleasant non-steamy breeze across us, it was a very un-Florida-like September moment. Loved it. Then of course I hammered my wedge into said forest, but we still made a birdie with Nate’s approach. Yay!
The blue tees we played were 6,435 yards, perfect for many vacationers to enjoy without feeling their games stretched to the limit. The rest of Orlando’s entertainment is just a few miles away, but feels far enough away for the focus to be where it should – on the next shot.
