Did you know July 30th is National Lasagna Day? Lasagna is the way to my husband's heart, so I'll certainly be celebrating this food holiday. Ribbons of pasta layered with savory meat and melted cheeses, it's certainly the ultimate in comfort foods.
Always the curious eater, I did some googling to find out what fun facts I could learn about this popular pasta and discovered the very first lasagna recipes actually didn't use tomatoes! Nope. Europeans didn't have tomatoes until the 13th century. (They originated in South America).
Also, the word for lasagna is believed to have originally referred to the pot in which the meal was cooked.
Neat, huh? Just reading about lasagna makes me hungry.
