St. Augustine Spanish Wine Festival

By: Kara Franker

Did you know that St. Augustine is the Spanish wine capital of America? Come celebrate the city's rich cultural heritage at the Spanish Wine Festival Oct. 21-26, 2013.

You'll get to taste centuries-old wines from Spain and enjoy special events that celebrate Spanish culinary heritage.

Begin the journey at noon on Mon. Oct. 21 with a four-course Spanish luncheon at First Coast Technical College. And it's all for a good cause! This program trains the homeless in culinary skills and helps them transition back into society.

Then on Tues. Oct. 22 at 5 p.m., experience the first ever “Blessing and Batalla de Vinos” in America. After a ceremonial blessing, participants dressed in white will begin a processional that ends with a "Batalla," which means battle -- it's a squirt gun fight! And get this -- the squirt guns are filled with wine. After the Batalla, everyone will enjoy Spanish tapas and you guessed it, Spanish wine.

On Oct. 23 and 24, beginning at 6 p.m., four of St. Augustine’s finest restaurants will serve Spanish wine pairings with tapas.

Take part in the Cava Reception and Tour of Spanish Dining at the River House on Fri. Oct. 25, and enjoy dishes like paella as you sip more delicious wine.

On Sat. Oct. 26, the Festival transforms St. Augustine’s Historic Visitor Information Center into the biggest bodega America’s First City has ever seen.  Check out hundreds of different Spanish wines, cheeses and tapas.
