The shortlist of nominees for the 2013 Rolex Yachtsman and Yachtswoman of the Year awards includes two Floridians. The nine men and six women, including 10 world champions, race everything from hydrofoils to one-design Olympic class boats.
The winners will be announced in mid-January and honored on Tuesday, February 25, 2014, during a luncheon at the St. Francis Yacht Club in San Francisco. The two finalists are Laser Radial World Bronze Medalist Paige Railey (Clearwater) and Laser Radial North American Champion Erika Reineke (Ft. Lauderdale).
In 2006, at age 19, Railey US Sailing's Yachtswoman of the Year award and the international sailing federation's World Sailor of the Year award. Paige proved she could compete on the international stage in 2007 when she won a gold medal in the Laser Radial class at the Pan American Games in Rio de Janeiro and was later a member of the U.S. Olympic Team.
Reineke finished first in the 2012, ICSA Women's Singlehanded National Championship and second in the Laser Radial 2011 ISAF Youth Sailing World Champs in Zadar, Croatia.
Established in 1961 by US Sailing, the annual presentation of US Sailing's Rolex Yachtsman and Yachtswoman of the Year awards are considered the sport's ultimate recognition of an individual’s outstanding on-the-water achievements for the calendar year. Over its history the coveted award has been presented to 40 men and 33 women, including these distinguished sailors who have claimed the honor multiple times.
