Florida duck hunters pray for early cold winters so that the migrations will reach Florida in time for opening day. I saw a good sign a few weeks before the opener of the 2013/2014 waterfowl season.
While tossing a retrieving dummy to my six-month-old Drahthaar pup, a big flock of bluewing teal dive-bombed us on the pond where I train him. Time to get the decoys organized, the calls tuned and the duck boat firing on all cylinders.
The first phase of the 2013/2014 waterfowl season opens Nov. 23 and runs through Dec. 1. Phase 2 begins Dec. 6, and runs through Jan. 26. There’s a youth hunting season Feb. 1 and 2.
There are more public duck hunting areas in Florida than you could hunt in a lifetime. Most of the St. Johns River watershed is open to public access. Lake Okeechobee is the perennial epicenter of the sport. The Everglades Water Conservation areas should be good.
I can’t wait for the dawn of opening day!
