Describing South Walton is quite a task.
Its villages are a mix of hippie and yuppie. It’s not unusual to see flip-flops paired with designer bags. The area is upscale and artsy, utterly elegant and utterly laid back at the same moment. It’s a nature enthusiast’s paradise -- one with sea oats and dunes, walkways that tumble into beaches laden with sugar sand, and emerald waters that are playgrounds for dolphins. South Walton has good eats and a boot-stomping, down-home nightlife. And it’s filled with natives who love their unique lifestyle.
Yet many folks have managed to capture South Walton’s magic in a few words.
The SoWal Forum, an insider’s guide for the area’s beaches, hosts a yearly contest dubbed “You're so SoWal if...” where folks complete the sentence. The Forum has just announced the winners for 2013. The entries include gems like …you can make a sandcastle on your floorboards and …you live in Grayton and ride your bike to work where there is a drink on the menu named after your house.
Check out the winners:
Overall Winner ... your bike has a sticker that says "my other car is a kayak." - Connie S.
First Runner Up ... you're more afraid of yellow flies than sharks.
- David Hopkins
Second Runner Up ... you've used the Truman show to describe your area.
- Nikhil Abuvala
But you should check out the entire list of entries. The descriptions are perfect. Even better, you should check out South Walton for yourself. Because who knows, you might find you’re so SoWal.
