Christmas waves a magic wand over this world, and behold, everything is softer and more beautiful. ~Norman Vincent Peale
Sanibel and Captiva Islands. Just rolling the words over my tongue brings a smile.
They bring back memories of the way my father grinned when we sailed off of Captiva in a tiny vessel to watch the sunset over Pine Island, and how my mother grasped his hand. Of hundreds of shorebirds wading in the shallows of the Ding Darling Preserve. And of my delight on meeting a 4-year-old child on the beach, showing me the living starfish she had rescued from the sand.
And now I hear about this little bit of holiday sweetness Sanibel and Captiva are offering, which is so like the Islands—unusual, whimsical, and spiced with a pinch of magic. The Christmas Luminary Trail features:
- More than three miles of luminary candles lining the main roads on Sanibel (Dec. 6, 2013) and Captiva (Dec. 7, 2013)
- Holiday decorations galore
- A live nativity scene
- Santa visits and photos
- Free trolley service
The fun starts at 5:30 p.m. and runs until 9 p.m. both nights.
If you're in the neighborhood, you should go. Because we could all stand a little magic in our lives.
