I’m not sure where to start.
After all, Unlock the Ocean offers almost everything except mermaids riding trick ponies by the surf—and they’ve probably added those by now.
New Smyrna Beach is starting off the year in a big way. Their Jan. 1, 2014 festivities at the Flagler Avenue Beach approach include Unlock the Ocean, where the mayor and a local celebrity use a huge branded key to symbolically unlock the ocean at the water's edge.
The fun continues with the Flamingo 5K Beach Run. Participants in the Run will receive a free t-shirt, and in keeping with the unlocking the beach theme, will also receive a key on a necklace. After the race, you’ll be able to try to see if it unlocks the security chain on any of 14 new beach cruiser bikes. If your key unlocks the bike, you win it.
Next on the agenda is the Flamingo Flop, a version of the Polar Bear Plunge with a Florida twist, at 10 a.m. The first 300 participants will be given a free flamingo item like a hat or glasses, and the "flop" area will be designated by inflatable flamingos.
Sounds like the key to a lot of fun!
