I discovered Paradise Beach (113 Paradise Blvd, Melbourne, FL 32903) during the height of spring break some years ago. Cocoa Beach was so busy that there was barely room to drop a beach towel, and I was in the mood for a peaceful escape. I headed south down A1A. A mere 15 minutes later I saw the sign for Paradise Beach.
I’d passed by the unassuming park before, but this time I pulled into the lot.
It was exactly what I was looking for. The boardwalk spilled out onto an empty sweep of cinnamon-hued sand, fringed by dunes lush with sea grass. A smattering of people lounged on the sand; a few surfers paddled out on the waves. It boasted volleyball courts, lifeguards, and a place to change. It was literally a little piece of paradise.
And I can’t imagine a sweeter place to watch an airshow.
The Melbourne Air & Space Show debuts Nov. 2-3, 2013, a soaring spectacle held over the oceanfront, centered at the Park. The Black Diamond Jet Team will headline the event, an all-star, all-civilian line up that features some of the nation's top air show performers and space-related demos.
The Crowne Plaza Melbourne Oceanfront is the show headquarters hotel and is located 1/2 mile from Show Center. General viewing of the Air & Space Show from the beach around Show Center is available at an early bird price of $10 until Oct. 1, 2013.
