To say Naples’ 37th Annual Great Dock Canoe Race is interesting is like saying Florida has lots of sand: a vast understatement.
This annual Naples’ tradition features canoe contestants racing for all their paddles are worth, but that’s only a small part of what makes it the area’s best-loved spectator sport. Each year, the Race selects a theme, and this year's is "Saturday Night Live."
Who knows who you’ll see churning a path through the waves?
The ‘Bathroom Cobra’ might slither into the picture, ‘Ian Rubbish’ could pick up a paddle, or the kids from the ‘Junior Prom’ might even make a splash – the possibilities are endless!
The Races start at 11 a.m., Saturday, May 11, 2013, in Crayton Cove, Naples. They begin at The Dock at Crayton Cove. The race lanes are located west of the markers. The path runs parallel to the City Dock, then through the small cove facing Naples Yacht Club, then north to the Riverwalk at Tin City, which is the halfway point. The return trip is the same course in reverse.
Admission is free, and the Races benefit the Special Olympics of Collier County.
