Life's pretty good, and why wouldn't it be? I'm a pirate, after all. Johnny Depp
Consider yourself forewarned.
William Augustus “Billy Bowlegs” Bowles – a dastardly pirate who some claim is entirely fictitious -- has been spotted off the shores of Northwest Florida’s Emerald Coast. And that’s not all. Rumor has it he plans to dock his ship at the Fort Walton Beach Landing, invade, and take over.
But he’ll hardly have you walking the plank. His arrival signals merriment and mayhem for mates and lassies of all ages, whether they’re landlubbers, old salts, seadogs or scallywags.
The Billy Bowlegs Pirate Festival, May 30 - June 1, 2013, is an annual event honoring the local pirate legend. It’s family-friendly and free, with fun that includes fireworks, pirate karaoke, a Torchlight Parade, a Buccaneer Bash with ships sailing in to ‘capture’ Fort Walton Beach, a pub crawl, costume contests and more.
The festival offers a ship-load of entertainment for little scallywags too. They can enjoy the kids area with a $10 daily wristband, which features a Pirate Boat Inflatable, 25' Tidal Wave Inflatable, Rush Express Inflatable, Rock Climb/Slide Obstacle Course, Camo Back Yard Obstacle Yard Course, Dunking Booth, and a 20' by 30' Misting Tent.
The fun even includes a chance to see – or be – a pirate zombie. Pirate Zombie Night, May 30, boasts contests and prizes sponsored by Cox and AMC's popular "Walking Dead" show.
For me, that seals the deal.
Because until you’ve seen zombie pirates, you haven’t lived!
