When my friend Kristen found a lump in her breast, she wasn’t worried. As she said to me, “Twenty-one year olds don’t get breast cancer.”
But the fact is, they do. She did. My beautiful, funny friend lost her hair, and there were lots of times I couldn’t even hug her because she'd just had her chemo and she couldn’t risk getting my germs.
So I’m a big fan of events like I Pink I Can Run, held at Flora-Bama Lounge & Package on Perdido Key, Sunday, Oct. 6, 2013. It aims to raise awareness and help socioeconomically challenged women in the Pensacola area receive early detection mammograms and assistance with breast cancer recovery.
Sponsored by the Krewe du Ya Yas, this run for a cause features a four-mile out-and-back course along Perdido Beach Boulevard, starting and finishing at Flora-Bama – which, no surprise, is hosting a post-race celebration.
You should go. Because running is good for your body, giving back is good for your soul, and sugar sand is good for your toes.
And do it for women like my friend Kristen, who just passed the five-year survival mark.
