Luxury with the Little Ones in Palm Beach

By: Julie Landry Laviolette

There’s a wooden play set shaped like a pirate ship, a dress-up studio where little girls can get a mini mani/pedi, and a DJ booth where teens can mix their own tunes.

But this resort has more to offer than child’s play.

An award-winning property with a legendary spa, sweeping oceanfront views and elegant dining, The Ritz-Carlton in Palm Beach offers a family getaway in a first-class setting.

And it’s all on sale for the summer.

If you thought a luxury vacation went the way of romantic dinners when the kids were born, you’re in for a treat. Two AAA five diamond Palm Beach resorts, The Ritz-Carlton and The Breakers, are offering summer deals to get families in the door in the slower months.

The Ritz-Carlton

This Mediterranean-style oceanfront resort offers discerning families a place to play and be pampered. During the summer, The Ritz-Carlton has two summer specials: discounted nightly rates, or a weeklong family summer camp called Camp Loggerhead.

From July 7 to Sept. 30, room rates start at $199. There’s also a $279 package that includes a room with a balcony, breakfast for two and a $100 resort credit.

A kids-only zone separates the big kids from the little ones. Children ages 5 to 12 are $65 for a half day or $90 for a full day. They’ll have fun with art activities, model makeovers, water sports, beach activities and the like.

Kids 13 to 17 have free access to Coast, the teen lounge, which has a DJ booth and dance floor, video gaming, computers and spaces to chill out. For a fee, teens also have access to their own salon, where they can get hair and make-up done, dress up and take a glamour shot.

The resort offers healthy options on its kids menu, and in the evening, you can enjoy family treats like s’mores at the fire pit.

The family camp is $5,600 for six nights for two adults and one child, which includes kids’ meal and activities, family activities, a parents’ night out dinner and a family dinner. Extra kids under 18 are $150.

Three-legged races, scavenger hunts and sing-alongs are part of the fun, but The Ritz-Carlton has thrown in some luxury items. There will be cooking classes with the chef, spa treatments and wine tasting for the parents, plus family-friendly offerings like turtle nest scouting, movies and archery. Camp Loggerhead is held June 23–29, July 21–27 and August 18–24.

The Breakers

A stunning Italian Renaissance structure loaded with old-warm charm is the setting for this family-friendly oceanfront resort. The Breakers, a 140-acre property, offers elegant surroundings and first-class fun.

With four pools, a children’s pool, whirlpools, a private beach and two waterfront restaurants open only to hotel guests, the resort gives families an exclusive getaway where pampering is the norm.

On the short walk from the main hotel to the Family Entertainment Complex, there is a playground, bicycle parking and a multi-sport court. The complex features The Italian Restaurant, a family-friendly eatery in a cozy, warm bricked room adjacent to a children’s area that includes an arts and crafts area, saltwater aquarium, family movie room, toddler play area and a game room. There, families can dine on cuisine ranging from Mediterranean snapper to brick-oven fired pizzas as the kids wander to and from the play areas.

Family activities such as bicycle tours of Palm Beach and guided snorkeling reef tours are available.

Through Sept. 1, The Breakers is offering a summer special starting at $299 Monday through Thursday and $379 Friday and Saturday, a 40 percent discount. The special includes continental breakfast, plus free dining and kids’ camp activities for children ages 3 to 12. (The kids’ camp is normally $95 a day.) Unlimited tennis and fitness classes for adults and kids are included, and discounts on golf and the spa are available.

During your stay, arrange for a sitter from the hotel so you and your loved one can have a drink and tapas at HMF, the resort’s cocktail bar. Maybe you don’t have to give up luxury vacations and romantic dinners after all.
