Amelia Island: A Fantastic Florida Destination

By: Gary McKechnie

For research on an upcoming story, a few days ago I headed up to Amelia Island and was shocked – shocked! – that it’s been more than 10 years since I was there last! That won’t happen again, no sir.

If you haven’t been to Amelia Island before, it really blends the best of everything. There’s plenty of history (Fort Clinch, Old Town, churches, historic homes, Palace Saloon), hospitality (many B&Bs including the Hoyt House, Florida House, Elizabeth Pointe Lodge), shopping (antiques and etc. all along Center Street), dining (seafood, steaks, Italian, Mexican and everything else you can imagine), recreation (parks and mile after mile after mile of splendid oceanfront) and far more than you can imagine. It’s a great resort town that has elegance (The Ritz and Omni have a high profile), but overall, it’s really a laid back feel.

Look for VISIT FLORIDA features about Amelia Island and Fernandina Beach – great Florida destinations.
