It's Where to Shop Wednesday and this week the spotlight is on Bajalia Trading Company, a boutique in Winter Park, near Orlando. I had a chance to speak with Debbie Farah, CEO of Bajalia. I am very inspired by the story of this boutique and online store that specializes in fair trade and whose mission is to "capture the rich cultural heritage of artisans worldwide by bringing to market timeless pieces from global entrepreneurs who are changing their world." In other words, Bajalia's one-of-a-kind pieces are not only beautiful, but they are also all about giving back!
J: When did you open Bajalia, and what inspired you to open it?
Debbie Farah: I am a former executive with experience in fashion, advertising and banking, and I was inspired to launch Bajalia after meeting a group of women textile artisans in India in 2003. Six years later, I launched Bajalia. Bajalia's jewelry line launched on the Home Shopping Network on International Women's Day in 2011.
J: What does Bajalia offer in Orlando that is unique?
Debbie Farah: Bajalia offers handcrafted products (jewelry, accessories, stationery and more) made by female artisans in more than 22 third-world countries that reflect local craft traditions but will appeal to fashion-conscious customers in the United States.
J: Who shops at Bajalia?
Debbie Farah: Wholesalers and conscious and fashion-oriented consumers, specifically women.
J: What is your favorite thing about shopping in Orlando?
Debbie Farah: Shops in Orlando offer diverse products. Particularly, in Winter Park, you can find shops that are dedicated to fair trade and others that focus on all things vintage.
