If you're a food truck enthusiast and a fan of shows like Bizarre Foods and Man vs. Food, then you must head down to the Florida Strawberry Festival this weekend and indulge in some fun festival fare. Since the event is a celebration of strawberries, you'll certainly find your fill of berry-flavored treats such as strawberry shortcake, strawberry cheesecake, strawberry funnel cake, strawberry ice cream, strawberry milkshakes, strawberry daiquiris, strawberry hot sauces, strawberry jams and even strawberry pizza.
For the more adventurous there is a selection of Southern fried foods to the extreme such as 18" long corn dogs, hamburgers sandwiched with doughnut buns, steaks on a stick and giant turkey leg drumsticks. To satisfy your sweet tooth, they also have deep-fried Oreos, deep-fried Twinkies, chocolate-dipped bacon, red velvet funnel cake and fried apple pie. And for the ultimate in bizarre food bragging rights... deep fried bubble gum and deep fried butter.
All of these might sound like a heart attack served on a napkin, and while I wouldn't recommend eating like this all the time, once a year can't hurt.
The Florida Strawberry Festival continues throughout the weekend with Toby Mac playing tonight, Rodney Adkins on Saturday, and Reba on Sunday. Tonight is also the Tampa Tribune Moonlight Magic Night on the midway where visitors can purchase a wristband for $20 to ride unlimited midway rides from 11 p.m. to 3 a.m.
Be sure to experience the fun rides, unusual foods, and big-name concerts before the festival ends March 11!
General admission is $10, rides food and concerts are an additional cost. For more information, visit FLStrawberryFestival.com.
IF YOU GO
- Take the Thonotosassa Road exit on I-4. There is a Publix there where I recommend grabbing a couple of bottled waters to-go and some extra cash for parking and fair food.
- Don't forget to bring sunscreen and a light jacket for when the springtime weather cools in the evening.
