More to Miami than South Beach

I love the glitz and glamour of South Beach but Miami isn’t just about bling. Whether you’re a culture vulture or a nature lover, each of the city’s diverse neighbourhoods have a totally different feel to them. Here are some of my favourites.
Coral Cables
With its tree-lined streets and Mediterranean inspired architecture, Coral Gablesis one of Miami’s swankiest districts and has a distinct European feel. Known as ‘The Beautiful City’ it’s home to Miracle Mile, with its high-end boutiques, and famous landmarks including The Biltmore Hotel and the historic Venetian Pool, a unique public swimming pool that features stucco walls and waterfalls.
Little Havana
Southwest Eighth Street, or Calle Ocho, is at the heart of Little Havana, the Miami neighbourhood that celebrates Cuban culture. With colourful murals and signs in Spanish, you can find everything from hand-rolled cigars and Cuban cafes serving churros and coffee to pulsating salsa music. The best time to visit Little Havana is the last Friday of the month when Calle Ocho comes alive with an open-air art gallery, artists, musicians and theatre.
Coconut Grove
If you’re after a more bohemian, laidback place to chill out in Miami head to Coconut Grove. Famous for being the oldest community in Miami, the pioneers settled here in the 1800s, Coconut Grove still retains a friendly, village feel. The Renaissance-style Vizcaya Museum and Gardens are incredibly romantic by day and at night the streets come alive with Coconut Grove’s vibrant mix of galleries, cafes, bars and restaurants.
Key Biscayne
Located off the coast of downtown Miami, the peaceful island of Key Biscayne has some of Miami’s best beaches, with miles of golden sands. Key Biscayne is great for families, it’s the perfect place to escape the madness of South Beach and be at one with nature.
Formerly an area of rundown warehouses, Wynwood is a bit similar to London’s Shoreditch in that it’s now the place for young people to be seen and is the cutting edge of the Miami art scene. Packed with galleries and the amazing street art of The Wynwood Walls there’s also a pop-up shop, cool cafes and bars.
