Winter the Dolphin was only three months old when she was found stranded on the shore near Cape Canaveral. It was December of 2005 and she was entangled in a crab trap and gravely injured.
She was transported to Clearwater Marine Aquarium (CMA) in Clearwater where they specialize in rescue, rehab and release. No one expected her to survive; she was dehydrated, thin and the wounds on her tail were so severe that blood flow was completely restricted, causing it to fall off.
The GREAT news is that Winter has defied all expectations, and thanks to round-the-clock care, she has grown into a completely healthy juvenile dolphin.
But what about her tail? How can a dolphin swim without a tail? In April 2007, the great folks at CMA got an amazing group of experts together to research and develop a prosthetic tail for Winter!
And Winter’s story just keeps gets better. She has become an animal media sensation – one of the biggest of all time. Her fame now reaches around the world. Even Hollywood came calling! This Sept. 23, you can see the story of Winter on the big screen with some serious heavy-hitter actors: Morgan Freeman, Ashley Judd and Harry Connick Jr. Watch the trailer for Dolphin Tale, the movie.
See you there – and at the movies! We cannot wait!
