Be Greek for a Night

Ever since backpacking around Greece in college, I have been a huge fan of Greek cuisine in general, and an even bigger fan of authentic Greek culinary experiences.

That's why I love visiting Tarpon Springs - a town in central west Florida that has a large Greek population and several stellar, truly genuine Greek restaurants. Walk the streets here and you'll really feel as though you're in Greece.

There's also a place called the Greek Town Grille in Clearwater - part restaurant, part banquet hall/dance club. Tonight, from 7 p.m. on, the place is holding "Greek Night," featuring the live music of Ellada, a Greek band that plays in venues across Florida. The $10 cover charge includes one drink. Call 727-447-7800 for reservations and click on the web site above for more information.

Ellada also plays festivals, Greek Orthodox churches, occasional free concerts at the sponge docks in Tarpon Springs (the next one is scheduled for 7 p.m. Sept. 18), and restaurants. Check out the band the last Thursday of every month at El Greco Cafe in Sarasota. The next performance there is scheduled for 6 p.m. Sept. 30. Check out the band's web site for more info.
