I got the chance to meet Tony Kantorski at the Las Olas Gourmet Farmers Market in Fort Lauderdale and experience the last fresh stone crabs of the season (it runs from Oct. 15 to May 15, every year) at Steve's Stone Crab, one of several vendors selling Florida's bounty at this small but excellent market. Tony is here every Sunday (look for the market on the corner of SE 12th Ave. and Las Olas Blvd.), selling things like Key West pink shrimp and Florida grouper filets out of coolers in the back of his pickup truck.
His regular customers know to call in advance to ask Tony to hold their orders, since fresh Florida seafood is in such high demand! And did you know Florida stone crabs are a sustainable seafood? After their claw is taken, they are thrown back into the water to regenerate it for the next season.
