Florida's Scenic Highways Celebrate Commemorative Weekend March 26-28; Alachua County A Highlight

By: Hilda Mitrani

Florida's 26 state-designated highway routes are notable for their unique archeological cultural historic natural recreational and/or scenic qualities. On March 26-28 many of them are commemorating Florida Scenic Highways Day with special events.

Near Gainesville the Old Florida Heritage Highway depicts the traditional way of life in north Florida. During the weekend the Micanopy Historical Society regulars will be re-enacting the Second Seminole War on Cholakka Boulevar.

In nearby Micanopy where the entire district is on the historic list popular movies including "Doc Hollywood" and "Cross Creek" were filmed. Just south of this part of Alachua County the Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings Historic State Park will offer guided tours of the writer's historic home.

Another interesting locale on the Old Florida Heritage Highway is the Wood & Swink Old Store and Post Office in Evinston. Not much has changed since the 1880s here at the oldest working country store and post office in the state. An old wood stove provides winter heat and visitors can buy home-canned jars of peppers fresh yellow squash or mail a registered parcel.

Other Florida highlights in this celebration of beautiful roadways include the Dixie Theater in Apalachicola along the Big Bend Scenic Byway which will host a music event. And in DeLand there will be a Florida Scenic Highways booth at the Florida Wildflower Festival on March 27 along the River of Lakes Heritage Corridor Scenic Highway.

If you’re tooling around Florida this weekend look for some of these events or check out the activities on the Suncoast Scenic Parkway the Bradenton Beach Scenic Highway and others that are distributing information about their particular route at the Welcome Centers.

If your travels bring you to Alachua County around mid-April look into the "Evinston to Cross Creek Paint Out" organized by the Conservation Trust for Florida and the Artist's Alliance of North Florida. The Paint Out culminates with the Gala Collector Sale at the Thomas Center in Gainesville on Friday and Saturday April 14-15.

Shopping culture history and scenic roads? There's plenty to do here for everyone! Bring your family and enjoy these unique events.
