Thursday, June 24 - Sandestin Golf and Beach Resort

By: Kevin Mims

Lots and lots of super cool stuff to do here at the Sandestin Golf and Beach Resort! I got up bright and early, and spent most of the day at the marina and at the beach. Whoa, there are some serious boats and yachts here at the Sandestin Golf and Beach Resort Marina. 98 slips of top-notch vessels, I might just become a stowaway!

I took a nice relaxing paddle at the marina, too. As a resort guest, you can use the sit-on-top kayaks and canoes for free - very cool! They also offer waverunner, YOLO board, sailboat and pontoon boat rentals.

After a couple of hours at the marina, it was time to hit the beach. This was the place to be! There was great weather and so many people were out enjoying it. I did notice a few scattered tarballs in the water, but there are no advisories or closures in effect. Watch the video, you'll see that plenty of people were still coming down and having a great time! I kicked back in a covered beach chair for a bit - I've been at the beach almost every day for a month, so I've gone from pale white, to slightly tan, to a full-on islander look. I figured I should hide out in the shade for a little bit, you know?

After sunset, it was another fun night at The Village of Baytowne Wharf, where families were enjoying a movie on the lawn. Playing was the Wizard of Oz, which happens to be a favorite of mine, when I was a kid, I recorded the sound from the TV on to a cassette and would listen to it in my bedroom. To this day I can still almost repeat the entire movie line by line.

Tomorrow it's off to Franklin County - Apalachicola, Carrabelle, and St. George Island. I'm an oyster fanatic, so there may be some trouble. Look out, Franklin County - here I come!
