Picture Tuesday: Checking in at Miami's Super-Chic Hotel Victor

By: Terry Ward

The only thing more difficult than naming my favorite Miami hotel would be naming my favorite Miami restaurant. This world-class city delivers above and beyond on all facets of the luxury front. But I'd definitely put Hotel Victor -- an intimate 88-room property on Ocean Drive -- near the top of my favorites list when it comes to where to stay.

I had the pleasure of checking in here a few months back when I was passing through Miami Beach on my way to a SCUBA diving trip in the Florida Keys.

Hotel Victor is a historic 1937 property that underwent major renovations and expansions to reopen in 2005. And I love how the original simple deco lines and lobby decorations still take center stage on the decor theme, while the rooms were embellished during the renovations to render them even more luxurious.

My favorite aspect of my Very Victor Suite was the enormous marble bathroom, with a huge infinity tub as the centerpiece and panoramic views of South Beach and Ocean Drive below. Despite being located on South Beach's main party drive (right next to the Versace mansion!), the room was very quiet when the windows were closed, and I had an excellent night's sleep.

There's a pretty rooftop pool where you can relax, but I'm a beach girl and was happy just to grab a towel and stroll across Ocean Drive to lay out in the sand (for you active types, there' s a wonderful paved promenade lining Ocean Drive that's perfect for a jog, walk or rollerblade session).

The hotel's restaurant, Vix, was closed the night I was visiting, but looked very enticing (be sure to pop in to see the fascinating aquarium here, with moon jellyfish pulsating within). From the hotel, you're an easy stroll to great dining options along Lincoln Road and Collins Avenue, where you'll find some of South Beach's best shopping, too. The hotel's location simply can't be beat.

Other Hotel Victor amenities include the V Spa, where you can indulge in an authentic Turkish Hammam ritual (steambath) or even a hand, wrist and arm massage called the 'Blackberry Addict' specifically designed to soothe those of us addicted to our PDAs (guilty as charged!).

The V Spa has a great spa special going now, too -- the hammam treatment plus a 30-minute detox massage costs just $115 (the regular price is $350).

If you're looking for an intimate, luxurious Miami Beach hotel with a boutique feel that's authentic to the city's stylish personality and offers easy beach access, you've got my word that Hotel Victor is just the spot. Enjoy!
