Memorial Day Weekend in the Sunshine State: Sizzling Hot Savings

By: Lauren Tjaden

Memorial Day.

It’s a day to reflect, to remember and to respect the souls that have given their lives for us, to make sure that we have rights and privileges and that our country has checks and balances and remains the freest place on the planet.

The long, last weekend in May is also the unofficial start of summer, and I can think of no better way to celebrate it than to splash into the Sunshine State for some sizzling hot fun – and some hot deals, too. Here are a few holiday hints that will leave you with a hefty wallet and have you twirling your beach towel for joy.

Getting Here:

The biggest and best news is that brand-new Northwest Florida Beaches International Airport is soaring into Panama City Beach just in time for Memorial Day. Its arrival means that it’s going to be a lot cheaper and a lot easier to get to the oh-so-sweet-sugar-white-sand of Northwest Florida’s beaches. The airport will be serviced by Delta and Southwest, and Southwest will be offering two daily nonstop flights to Baltimore, Houston, Nashville and Orlando.

Staying and Playing Here:

More accommodations than you can shake a sandal at are offering tempting Memorial Day deals. The easiest way to find them is to check the website of your dream-destination’s Visitor’s Bureau and search for specials. How they are listed differ slightly on each website: for example, the Martin County Convention and Visitor’s Bureau has a red “Specials” button, Visit Pensacola has a “Coupons” link and the Monroe County Tourist Development Council – in the Florida Keys -- has a “Keys Kash” link. What they all have in common is super savings.

Follow the same method to snag discounts and holiday specials on everything from miniature golf to dolphin tours to massages and more.

Now grab your sunscreen and start packing!
