Weary of the well-worn trail? Step off of it and dip your toes in the pool of adrenaline with these 10 adventures:
1.Whip around on a wakeboard at the Orlando Watersports Complex
You can ride on the cableway or behind a boat at this famed facility, the only one in the country that offers two cableways. Besides wakeboarding, you can water ski, kneeboard or trick ski; watch brave and often famous wakeboarders and wakeskaters practice jaw-dropping tricks on a myriad of obstacles – or join them, if you’re a hotshot. OWC offers rentals, a snack bar, a pro shop, demos, lessons, clinics and camps and hosts frequent competitions.
2.Take a treetop-level eco-tour on a zipline at Forever Florida in St. Cloud
This cool canopy tour, dubbed the Zipline Safari, features seven ziplines and two suspension bridges, and will have you soaring as high as 55 feet over the Sunshine State’s forest and swamp on more than a mile of zip cable. Too tame for you? Try a zipline tour by moonlight. This 4,700-acre cattle ranch and nature preserve also offers horseback riding, a restaurant, a gift shop, hiking, coach safaris, summer camps and wild animal shows.
3. Barnstorm in a biplane at Fantasy of Flight in Polk City
These thrilling 15-minute flights over the orange groves, pastures, lakes and swamps are booked on a first-come, first-served basis and are available October through August (weather permitting). A minimum of two and a maximum of four guests can ride on each flight. Age restrictions apply. While at Fantasy of Flight, admire more than 40 rare and vintage aircraft, awe at daily flight demonstrations or be inspired by the interactive exhibits.
4.Rollerblade the trails
Rent everything you need from Bikes and Blades, located smack dab on the West Orange Trail at Killarney Station. Challenge yourself on the hills to the west and picnic on the shores of Lake Minneola in Clermont, roll east into historic Winter Garden for some lunch at a café or head into Apopka or north to the Clarcona Horseman’s Park. If rollerblading sounds too tipsy for your taste, rent a bike or hike instead.
5. Swing from a trapeze at Tito Goana's Flying Trapeze Academy in Venice
If you want to score enough brownie points with the kids to open a fudge factory, bring ‘em here – or fulfill your fantasy of running away to the circus.
6. Instead of sightseeing, try flightseeing
A serene balloon ride in Tallahassee, Orlando, Miami or Tampa will provide a view of Florida you’ll never forget. If you book a flight for two, you can be assured that romance will be in the air.
7.Canoe the tea-colored wild waters of Fisheating Creek
Fisheating Creek Campground in Palmdale will drive you 16 miles up to Ingram’s Crossing with a canoe – yours or theirs – so you can paddle and drift back through the remote, thick cypress swamps and beside hardwood hammocks on a two-day excursion. Feel more like a two-hour paddle than a two-day one? That’s as fine as a Florida morning. The campground offers kayak and canoe rentals, full hookup and tent sites, livery service, a camp store, a swimming lake, fishing, laundry, two bathhouses and rental units.
8.Ride horses along the beaches of Amelia Island State Park
Amelia Island State Park is one of the few locations in the southern United States that allows horses on the beach. Kelly Seahorse Ranch, located inside the park and endorsed by the state, will saddle up one of their docile equines for you and take you on the tour of a lifetime. Reservations are required.
9.Skim over the waves in a sailboat
The oh-so-family-friendly Colony Beach & Tennis Resort on Longboat Key near Sarasota will show you the ropes on a Hobie Cat or just rent you the gear if you have experience sailing. Besides sailing (and tennis, of course), you can bask on the beach, snorkel, bike, play on an Aqua Cycle, raft, boogie board, kayak or fish. Rentals are available.
10.Go solo on a YOLO Board
Sandestin Golf and Beach Resort in Destin offers stand-up paddleboard rentals, Paddle Fit classes and group events. The sport requires standing up on an oversized surfboard and using a canoe-like paddle for power. You can enjoy a serene paddle through the emerald waters, challenge yourself with a butt-busting workout or even fish atop a YOLO. The initials stand for “You Only Live Once,” a slogan yours truly can certainly get behind.
