From vibrant downtown to stylish yet low-key Coconut Grove to pulsing, see-and-be-seen Miami Beach – Miami's greatest strength as a gay destination is its variety of exceptionally cool neighborhoods. It's a sophisticated big-city locale and a relaxing resort getaway.
Wherever you venture in Greater Miami and the Beaches, you'll be warmly received, and a party is just around the corner. Throughout the year, the city celebrates GLBT pride with action-packed fetes and festivals.

Neighborhoods: Glitzy, Ritzy and More
There's no shortage of glitzy and ritzy neighborhoods in Greater Miami to shop for designer threads, munch on globally inspired contemporary cuisine and dance and hobnob at dance clubs, but the heart of the gay scene is South Beach.
Here along the Lincoln Road pedestrian mall you'll find block after block of swank boutiques, edgy art galleries, cosmopolitan sushi bars, gelato stands, Cuban and Nuevo Latino eateries and Italian trattorias – many with sidewalk seating. You can end the night with cocktails at hip gay bars like Score and Halo.
Walk down the city's other popular thoroughfares, such as Washington Avenue and Ocean Drive, and you'll discover more dining and retail, plus South Beach's legendary hotels, many of them gloriously restored, pastel-hued Art Deco beauties from the 1930s and '40s. Particularly popular with gay visitors are the Delano, The National Hotel, the Ritz-Carlton and The Tides, but there are dozens of enticing options, many of them just steps from the gay beach at 12th Street and Collins Avenue.
Of course, the fun continues well beyond South Beach. Drive north along the beachfront to discover the luxe retail at the Bal Harbour Shops, and to northern Dade County to partake of the shopping pleasures inside massive Aventura Mall. Just across Biscayne Bay from South Beach, downtown Miami and its chic Design District have enjoyed a dramatic rejuvenation in recent years – they sit just north of one of the world's busiest cruise ports (out of which gay-chartered cruises often sail).
Drive south along the bay and you'll come to what was historically Miami's gay hub, the bohemian Coconut Grove neighborhood, which abounds with one-of-a-kind restaurants and shops. Just a bit farther southwest, there's still more fine dining, rich hotels and sybaritic spas to investigate in posh Coral Gables. You definitely won't lack for things to see and do in Miami or its beach communities.
A Wealth of Arts and Culture
Befitting a sophisticated metropolis with an international following, Miami is blessed with fine museums and galleries, plus renowned theater companies, dance troupes and music venues reflecting the city's rich cultural diversity. Right on Lincoln Road, you can attend a stirring concert by the critically acclaimed New World Symphony. Or catch a performance of the Miami City Ballet or the Florida Grand Opera.
Learn the story of South Beach's world-famous trove of Art Deco architecture at the Wolfsonian-Florida International University art and design museum (known just as Wolfsonian). Be sure to check out the exhibitions at the Bass Museum of Art, Miami Art Museum and Museum of Contemporary Art. Miami and the Beaches also supports dozens of artists' collectives and nonprofit arts spaces.
A Parade of GLBT Events and Parties
South Beach hosts some of the most famous gay social events in the world, many of them raising thousands of dollars for GLBT-related charitable causes. These multi-day parties draw jubilant revelers from across the Americas, Europe and even farther afield.
The partying kicks off in March with the weeklong Winter Party Festival. From late April to early May, you can attend the increasingly prestigious Miami Gay & Lesbian Film Festival, and May's Aqua Girl draws thousands of lesbians to South Beach. In July, Miami Beach Bruthaz has become one of the world's most well-attended such gatherings. And in November, join some 25,000 die-hard bon vivants for White Party Week.
That's not even counting the dozens of food, music and arts festivals – many of which have a strong following among gay and lesbian visitors – from Miami Fashion Week in April to the Food Network South Beach Wine & Food Festival in February.
There's so much to draw your interest here that you may find it challenging to find time to laze on the beach. Do make the effort, however – Miami claims some of the most stunning beaches in the world, all 22 miles of them.
