Will you be spending time driving on toll roads during your Florida visit? Florida’s Turnpike Enterprise is making some changes to its toll plazas. Here’s what you need to know:

Florida’s Turnpike Enterprise began what eventually will become a statewide conversion of turnpike toll plazas from traditional cash collection to all-electronic open road tolling. The project began with the southern 47 miles of Florida’s Turnpike in Miami-Dade County, from Milepost 0 in Florida City north to Milepost 47 at the Miami-Dade/Broward County line. This portion has been completed as or February 2011. During construction, turnpike drivers may see lane closures statewide. Construction on other turnpike portions will begin in 2012. For details, visit www.FloridasTurnpike.com. You can also watch this video explaining the new system and expected completion dates.

Drivers on all toll roads in Florida will see signs at toll plazas about all-electronic open road tolling. This new system eliminates the need for drivers to stop at toll plazas. Cash collection booths will be removed and replaced with overhead readers and cameras that will scan for SunPass transponders and license plates. The new system is considered safer and more convenient.

For drivers who encounter these new toll plazas in Miami-Dade County and don’t have a SunPass, Florida’s Turnpike Enterprise has established “Toll-by-Plate.” Cameras over the travel lanes will take an image of the license plates of vehicles without a SunPass. The plate will be matched to the vehicle’s registered owner, and a bill will be sent to the owner for the toll, plus a monthly administrative charge of $2.50. To avoid this charge, drivers are encouraged to contact Florida’s Turnpike Enterprise at 1-888-TAG TOLL (824-8655) and set up a pre-paid Toll-by-Plate account. Interested in buying a SunPass? Call 1-888-865-5352 or visit www.sunpass.com.

Visitors driving rental cars should check with their rental car companies about charging their tolls to their credit cards.

Certain Car Rental Companies (Dollar) have decided to fleece the tourist because of this move. $6.95 EVERY day you have a car, regardless of Toll Road use is a rip-off. You should stop them doing this - it will stop people coming to Florida when word gets around.

As another "soon-to-be visitor", this move scares the life out of me, especially after a very unhelpful experience with a Car Rental company at Orlando Airport on my last visit in May 2011! You are simply giving Car Rental companies another excuse to fleece customers. What is to stop them charging $25 against every "Toll by Plate" fee? It would be nigh impossible for someone from the UK to challenge this. Some of us like to see the "real" Florida - away from the likes of Orlando "experiences". Your move may prove to be a not well thought out deterrent.

As a soon to be visitor, I was not aware of the drive to cashless tolls. This is causing me great concern. We have travelled many thousands of miles throughout the USA from the great north in Alaska, California and the south east to the north east. It is not the problem of the willingness to pay the tolls but is there a system in place to provide a simply solution for visitors. It is all well and good to suggest going with a rental company that provides the necessary pass or a system to add to your credit card bill, but what does that do as we infringe some minor traffic violation and suddenly find an enourmous surcharge! I await any advice

I see this as hurting the tourism industry due to the excessive fees that rental car companies are charging to unwary customers who are not aware of the toll booth free roads. I can tell you that the rental car companies are NOT making it clear to travelers of the new rules, and are making a bundle on this, $25.00 fee per missed toll, plus the cost of the toll. There are 49 more states to vacation in that are not looking to take advantage of their visitors. Thanks for keeping the ecomony going and providing jobs to all of the toll takers who just lost theirs.

I think its a bad idea. All states should have a universal transponder.

Why not join with the EZ-Pass? Don't mind paying toll, but if each state has its own electronic pass??Wow would I have to buy one for each state?

Hello turnpike peoples, thank you now I won't have to pay tolls in south Florida! You can send me all the bills with fees you want, cause I won't pay you can't screw up my already messed up credit and when I go back up north you cant get me with a bench warrant or nothing. So thanks again you made my vacation cheaper. Oh and how you gonna get the illegals to pay? Don't they have fake documents and addresses.

I wanted to address your question about the administrative fee with the toll roads. To avoid this fee, you can contact Florida’s Turnpike to set up an account at 1-888-TAG TOLL (824-8655). It would work the same way as a sunpass. Also, if you have a sunpass, you would not be charged the administrative fee. The fee is charged once a month if you don’t have an account or a sunpass and you go through a toll plaza. If you go through toll plazas several times in a month – without an account – you will be charged the one-time administrative fee. For more information, please call Florida’s Turnpike at 1-888-824-8655.

What do tourists do so as not to be charged administrative fee? Wouldn't that fee have already been included previously in the form of toll taker salaries? And now you are adding administrative fees to pay the salaries of those who will now do the billing.

I agree, this is just another money making scheme like red light cameras to scam more money out of unsuspecting travelers. I think cash should always be an option and debit or credit cards should be accepted. This is just another way to eliminate the toll taker job from the system and put some more persons who this job may make a difference in the quality of their lives, out of work. Shame on you. it is bad enough that you have the toll roads to begin with, my state has none. Isn't it enough you tax us to build the road and maintain it and then you collect a fee to line someones pockets also. If we must pay a toll, please allow us to pay one set fee as we travel and do not add monthly fees and other taxes to the system we already have. I will try to avoid your "pay roads" at all cost if this is going to be the norm. Maybe we will go somewhere else instead of Florida.

I think its absurd not to have open a coin operated toll both.I see now the goverment is dictating how we drive & pay our bills.I guess Amendment 1 of our Constitution is being violated.
