Long before Florida's earliest inhabitants developed pottery, they made baskets from pine straw and other plant fibers to carry and store food and other goods.
Sites buried in wetland muck and other anaerobic environments are the most likely to contain the remains of baskets that are thousands of years old, providing a glimpse of this ancient and skilled practice. Seminoles and Miccosukees continue basket weaving traditions today.
